New Year at Fushimi Inari Shrine
At New Year many Japanese people visit Shinto shrines to pray for luck and protection in the coming year. Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto is extremely popular and attracts a lot of visitors, Although the weather is cold, the atmosphere is exciting and festive. Food stalls line the streets around the shrine selling ama-zake (a sweet drink made with sake lees and served hot.) Typical vendor food like takoyaki and yakisoba are also available. Fushimi Inari is famous as a place where you can eat grilled sparrow. I didn't try it yet.
